What Is BS 7858:2019 — And Why Does It Matter?

Covenant Crest Group Ltd · Compliance Guides
In short: BS 7858:2019 is the British Standard for security screening of individuals employed in a security environment. It's not a legal requirement for every security role, but it's the benchmark most serious clients — retail, facilities management, corporate — expect their security supplier to work to.

What BS 7858:2019 Actually Covers

BS 7858 sets out a recruitment vetting process specifically designed for people who will work in security-sensitive environments — door supervisors, security officers, CCTV operators, and similar roles. It goes further than a standard right-to-work or DBS check. A screening process carried out to BS 7858 typically verifies:

The 2019 revision tightened requirements around evidencing employment gaps and made the standard more explicit about what "verified" actually means — documented and checked, not just declared by the candidate.

Why It's Not Just a Box-Ticking Exercise

Security roles carry real access — to buildings, to people, sometimes to cash or confidential information. A candidate with a five-year employment gap that's never been questioned, or a reference that was never actually contacted, is a real operational risk to whoever hires them. BS 7858 exists because "we did a DBS check" is not the same as "we properly vetted this person."

For a client commissioning security staff, asking whether your supplier's screening is BS 7858 compliant is one of the fastest ways to separate a properly run agency from one that's cutting corners on the checks that actually matter.

Where We Stand
